For those who rely on DragonPad as their main destination for dictation, it’s only a matter of time before we find its default Arial 10pt font a contributing factor to declining visual acuity.
Moreover, setting the font each and every time is a laborious task. And finally, the font you choose never holds at the very end of the document even when selecting all.
Thusly, change the default font in Dragon’s options.ini file. This file should not be tampered with beyond what is mentioned below and Speakeasy Solutions will not hold itself accountable for any problems stemming from the advice outlined herein.
In other words, proceed at your own risk.
- Close Dragon.
- Find the options.inifile in one of the following directories:
- Windows XP OS — C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10\Users\< User Name >\Current
- Windows Vista & 7 OS — C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10\Users\< User Name >\Current
- Open the options.ini file in Notepad.
- Change the default font and size as follows (or with your own preference):
- enx Default font=Times New Roman
- enx Default font size=240
- Save and close the options.ini file.
- Start Dragon.
That’s it! Enjoy!

Thats a very nice hint, but why doesn’t it work with server profiles?!
I use Dragon 10.1 pro, german language, the server path is X:\SP10\myname\current. I changed the “enx” to “deu”, rebootet the PC, etc… But Dragon seems to ignore these settings. Any solutions?
I have found that this hint does not work in all versions (i.e. Dragon Small Practice Medical). I presume whatever hack Nuance engineered is only available to users of Dragon Medical/Professional English. Contact your German Dragon support people and let them know that this hack exists in North America, and is there a way for it to exist for you. Good luck!
I know that it’s working in the german version of DNS 10 SP1, I’ve seen it.
And now I found a way:
There is a local options.ini on every PC you are working with. It can be found at C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10\RoamingUsers\Server-Profile (sorry, only the german path). There you can enter the font and size. I don’t know, why its that complicated, but its works!
Prima! I’m delighted you found a solution. Enjoy. I know how annoying that tiny font size is to stare at. All the best.
