Whether you are selecting files via an open folder/drive, Windows Explorer or even from an application’s Open dialog box, you can select multiple files almost as easily as you can select a single file.

Selecting a single file requires you to simply click on the file in question. Pressing the < Enter > key or clicking on the selected file a second time will open that file. Note that double clicking a file will also open the file.

If you wish to select multiple files that are not in sequence, hold down a < Ctrl > key while you click on each individual file you wish to select. You may only do this within the currently displayed folder. If you wish to unselect a selected file, simply click it a second time (with the < Ctrl > key still pressed).

Do not release the < Ctrl > key until you have finished selecting and/or unselecting files. If you release the key and then click on another file, you will unselect all files previously selected. If you release the key and wish to select more files, hold down a < Ctrl > key again, and continue selecting files by clicking.

If you wish to select multiple files that are in sequence, click the first file in the sequence and then hold down a < Shift > key while you click on the last file of the sequence you wish to select. You may only do this within the currently displayed folder. If you selected the incorrect sequence, repeat the previous steps again (after releasing the < Shift > key). Do not release the < Shift > key until you have finished selecting the desired sequence of files.

As a tip, you can release the < Shift > key and press the < Ctrl > key to additionally select individual files out of the sequence.

If you wish to select all but one or a couple of files within a sequence, click the first file in the sequence and then hold down a < Shift > key while you click on the last file of the sequence you wish to select. Release the < Shift > key and press the < Ctrl > key to unselect the individual files within the sequence selected that you do not desire.

You may only do this within the currently displayed folder.

An example where this is useful is if you are using the Add words from document feature within Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It is cumbersome to open one file at a time from a folder when you wish to select and open multiple files within a folder. Use the steps outlined above to assist you.
